Silverfish & Moths - How To Protect Your Wool From These Pesky Critters

Have you fallen victim to silverfish & moths before? These pesky bugs can do major damage to your favorite clothing if you don't take the necessary steps to safeguard against them.

For those that need a refresher, silverfish are tiny light grey and blue wingless insects that can grow to ½ inches long. They and moths like high humidity level areas in your home and enjoy munching on your textiles, especially wool and cashmere. You can tell you have a silverfish problem if you clothing has a shaved appearance or there are small irregular holes or small yellow stains. Moth larvae have a specific diet and typically pick clothes made from animal fibers such as silk, wool, cashmere, angora or fur, and materials that contain keratin. Keratin is composed of fibrous structural proteins and can also be found in our skin and hair.

The easiest way to safeguard against these pesky critters is to wash everything at the beginning and end of the season before you pack it away. Body oils and scents along with food stains are attractive to these guys so cleaning your garments will help. With silverfish, wrap your clothing in nylon, as they do not like to eat it and also use a sweet fragrance, like cedar or lavender, which is noxious to them to keep them away. Do your best to avoid storing your clothing in damp, humid areas as well.
